Water softeners, also known as ion exchange units, replace the magnesium and calcium ions in the incoming water supply with sodium ions by passing it through a cylinder containing resin beads.
Every so often the unit needs to undergo a regeneration cycle to clear away all the mineral build up in the beads and recharge them with sodium. This entails soaking the beads in a strong solution of water and salt (brine). Once done, the brine is flushed away with the unwanted magnesium and calcium, and the softening process resumes.
